Hello
My partner and I have just had an offer accepted on a property on Home Farm Gardens KT12 Walton on Thames. We have just been informed that the property is steel framed and had no idea this was something to be weary of.
The house is in good condition with recent renovations in the last 2 years.
From reading this really helpful forum, it seems that the main issue is house insurance and then getting a lender to give you a mortgage.
We will get a survey done and see what they think and if we can get a mortage or not.
But is there anything anyone can advise us on, anything we should be looking out for?
We are first time buyers so keen to not fall into something that we won't be able to sell in years to come!
Thanks
@kc23 We were first time buyers when we bought ours, however, we had lived in the property for a number of years before buying it as a council tenant.
Building and contents insurance I've found to be around double of the cheapest quote for a standard build house and most places won't insure you. Don't let that put you off though, its still not a fortune to insure.
We have our mortgage with Nationwide building society and had banking to them to get the mortgage if I remember rightly.
Good luck
@kc23 hi
In case you’re still considering…
We’ve lived in a BISF house ( in Scotland / Edinburgh) for over 3 decades.
ours got refurbished while still council tenants and we’ve insulated further from the inside ( currently in process of doing more insulation - it’s worth it).
depending on area, these houses are slightly different built- majority of them can be gutted and reformed bar the supporting wall, which is around the middle of ours.
one issue we’ve come across though is the fact that it’s quite challenging to get solar panels fitted- hardly any of them in our area have any .
