   Hi, there hoping someone can help me, so my late parents house is a BISF houses in Albany Rd, RM12 4AG which is listed on here, it still had the orange colour corrugated type roof, is this the original roof? I have emailed the council as ex council but not had a response, all the BISG houses have roofs, some like ours and some tiled and some asbestos?

    The initial rip out and planning phase is probably my favourite time of owning one of these houses due to the scope of improvements than can be undertaken, especially when starting from scratch.

    Can you add Coveham Crescent, Cobham, KT11 1AR please.

    I’m currently looking to buy a house and I’ve found out with help of this site that a lot of the houses on this street are BISF and I’m trying to understand more about them.

    Anyone who could identify the name of this particular build and show pics of the external wall construction would be helpful as if we can buy this it does need a lot of internal work and maybe external wall insulation?

       Hello Solz, thank you for your valuable contribution.

       Just as we start to think we must have the majority of streets listed by now, a few more pop up, thanks to the assistance of our readers like yourself.

       I can confirm that the houses are indeed BISF construction, which is one specific build type on its own, rather than categorising all steel frame houses as BISF.

       If the house hasn’t been insulated externally, you should find a rendered wall to the lower elevation and classic steel sheeting to the upper.

       In it’s original construction form the walls structure can be seen in this diagram.

    Thanks for the update Bloop Bleep, that’s a great update for the list.

    I’m surprised that these houses haven’t received an external insulation upgrade yet. Apart from the windows and the roofs, they appear almost original which is surprising, as a great deal of the Northern housing stock has been upgraded.

       Hi Lucy, thank you for your input but the properties you mention aren’t actually BISF Houses although I must agree that in many ways they do look very similar.
       

       The houses at this location are actually Modus houses, manufactured by the Amey Chivers Housing Co. Ltd
       They were Designed by Alex Robertson, Peter Francis and Partners R H Sims and they were built around 1966–70.
       They are in fact quite a rare property with only around 280 built in the UK.
       They are sometimes also called the Amey Chivers house. Amey Chivers went on to become the company that we know as Amey today.

       Unlike the BISF house that was built with a steel frame, these properties were constructed from Pre Cast Concrete.

       I’m very glad you found these though as I had been searching for some of these properties to investigate for quite a while so many thanks indeed.

       Hi Lucy, the houses in Earls Close are actually Tarran Newland houses which are often mistaken for BISF Houses. The ones that I have seen have been refurbished to a very high standard with brick slips, making identification even more difficult but thank you for your input.

    I bought a BISF house in Halcot Avenue, Bexleyheath, Kent DA6 which isn’t on the database which is surprising as there must be 200 BISF houses here. The locals call it “Tin town" but I have found the house to be excellent. Extremely good value at £117,00 at auction. Appeared on " Homes under the Hammer" and the presenter, Lucy, went on and on about concrete cancer etc. and when I told them they were wrong in the second episode and that they are steel framed houses with no concrete cancer problems etc., they edited out all my comments! So much for TV property “experts"!

       I remember seeing your house when it was first on the show in 2012 but missed the re-visit in 2013.  I saw it again this morning with the valuation from last month and wondered why it looked familiar until I realised that I used to park in Halcot Avenue when I worked at the Civic Offices for a couple of months earlier this year and when the weather was nice, we would have lunch in the park by your house.  You’ve done a great job (helped by ‘She who must be obeyed’! )  and your little dog is lovely.

    Hello,

    There are a number of these houses in the DD3 area of Dundee, Scotland..Nithsdale Avenue, Lauderdale Avenue, Teviotdale Avenue, Annandale Avenue, Eskdale Avenue, Livingstone Place, Livingstone Terrace. Lived there from 1959 onwards. My Grandmother obtained one of the house after the war and we have lived there ever since. My mother has lived there since she was nine years old and is now 79 years old. They are being sold for around £80.000. The interior was ripped out and insulated after a woman died back in the 80s. The house went up in fire in less than five minutes and she couldn’t escape through the windows so they were all refurbished. Lovely scheme and very sought after.

    Hi, New member here looking for info on BISF in Hull. We are looking to buy possibly a BISF property as we seem to have been drawn to this kind of house design. One property we have looked at is on Eastmount Avenue, Hul,l HU8 9EN in Eat Hull. The houses on Eastmount Avenue are definitely BISF and should be added to the list. The neighbouring estate of Holm Garth Drive also appears to be BISF but I can not at the moment confirm this. There are more streets to the West of Hull including: Grammar School Road, Hartoft Road, Cropton Road, Hayburn Avenue, Welburn Grove, Brompton Close, Hutton Close, Slingsby Close, Castleton Avenue, Knapton Avenue, Ebberson Grove, Salton Avenue, Thorgill Grove and Appleton Road;all part of a large estate off Bricknell Avenue HU5.
    I’m particularly interested to know what type of house this is at 51 Appleton Road, HU5 4 PD http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-43167992.html?premiumA=true as we are interested in buying. If anyone could help out with identifying whether any or all of these streets are in fact BISF houses, especially 51 Appleton Road I would be most grateful.

    hello all
    i am a new member and i am trying to get some information if possible, firstly i live in Ellesmere drive, Seaham, Co. Durham, SR7 8DS. Here goes over the pass 6 months or so the majority of houses in my street have had some form of external insulation done to their houses. i spoke to a site foreman when they first started carrying out the work on the houses and was told it was a funded scheme by the government and a energy company EDF i think. He told me that they were doing the council owned properties first the rest of houses in my street and we would be informed by a letter on how to apply to have the external insulation work carried out for a pound (£1) so i waited for the letter and but never saw it, so i can only assume that i threw it away with piles of other junk mail i receive. i managed to speak to another site supervisor about a month a go only to be informed that i was to late and the houses they were doing at present were the last as funding was no longer available and the site manager had moved onto another project. i asked the supervisor if the site manager could come and visit me the next time they were in the area to find out what options i had or were available to me to get my house upto to same standard as the rest of my street (see photo added by site admin 2 aug 2013 less roof) , but nothing ever came of it so now i am stuck in a house that looks out of place on my street. so any information about any other similar funded schemes would be a great help. thank you very much

    I’m a new member and would like to report of a Number of BISF A1 type houses in Braintree Essex. I live on Rosemary Avenue CM7 2TB where there are 68 semi detached, 20 on Gilchrest way, 32 on Coldnailhurst Avenue, 4 on Deanery Hill, 44 on Deanery Gardens, 10 on Dean Rogers Place and a terrace of three odd prefabs on Dean Rogers Place. I have done alot of work on the house by gutting the internal walls and changing the layout with new 2×4″ stud walls, plaster board and insulating it with reflective foil insulation. I have put some patio doors in where the dining room window was and block off the existing back door to make the kitchen bigger. I want to put a door to the outside coal storage room from the bottom of the staircase and make it a utility room. I think there is a metal cross member behind in the wall. Can anyone confirm this?     I hope my previous two posts have given happy memories to other people who lived in these style houses. For me, it was a great house to grow up in. I still vividly remember the sound of the house creaking and banging on a summers evening – the sound of running up & downstairs (and which stairs creaked), the sound of the original front door shutting. Also the sound of walking on the footpaths around the houses.

    I grew up in one of the many BISF Steel Houses in Dronfield, Derbyshire. I’ve noticed none of them are on your list, so here’s a list of all if the, which you can hopefully add. They are all still standing and lived in today.

    Orchard Square, Dronfield Woodhouse, Derbyshire, S18 – 8 houses
    Holm Close, Dronfield Woodhouse, Derbyshire, S18 – 14 houses
    Fairview Road, Dronfield, Derbyshire – 20 houses
    Cecil Road, Deonfield, Derbyshire, S18 – 30 houses
    Chiverton Close, Dronfield, Derbyshire, S18 – 12 houses
    Snape Hill Close, Dronfield, Derbyshire, S18 – 16 houses

    There are also some in the neighbouring village of Unstone, so here’s a list of those.

    Hi Rai and welcome to the site! I looked into having solar panels put on my roof at Freeview Road, Bath, BA2 1DS, but hardly anyone would fit them because of the roof type (asbestos cement sheets on a steel structure) and the only quote I did get was a lot higher than the going rate.

    Please add Harcourt Green in Wantage, Oxfordshire. It is a small development of 32 BISF homes around a small green area. I will upload pictures at a later date. Many of the houses have been updated and extended (including a whole NEW 3-bed attached house) whilst many remain in their original condition.

    We have lived here for 12 years and love the house. We installed a conservatory onto the rear dining room and removed the window making a larger living space. We are considering a two storey side extension but need to save up first!

    I was surprised to find there are more BISF houses in Bath today, on the other side of town from here. I’ve lived here most of my life and it’s not a very big place but I’d never seen them before, but today while going for a walk up onto Kelston Roundhill I could see some more in Weston.

    They are at Eastfield Avenue, The Weal and Holcombe Green, Weston, Bath.

          Thank you too for you submission, Hillsyde looks like a really nice spot and perhaps the only place I have seen where most houses are painted the same colour.

    Hi Marc, just to let you know Cleve Green, Shaws Way and Watery Lane are in Bath not Bristol. Also, I don’t think there any BISF houses that are actually on Watery Lane although you can see them from Watery Lane – their addresses are actually Shaws Way even though the road is behind the houses (the houses have been built the ‘wrong’ way round).

    Another one for you is Silbury Road, Ashton Vale, Bristol, which is a different part of Bristol from those you’ve already got.

    Am in the process of moving into a BISF house after growing up in one.
    Cant see Swansea on the list anywhere, there are three seperate council areas full of BISF houses

    Gendros is the one i am familiar with road names – upper kings head road, moorview road, gendros avenue west, gendros avenue east, penrhos place, pentregethin road

    There are also BISF houses in penlan, westcross and waunarlwydd. Swansea.

          You’re welcome, I’m rather fascinated to know where else they are too. There are more in Silbury Road, Ashton Vale, Bristol. There may be more in that area, but as there are a lot of mid-20th Century houses in that part of Bristol they don’t stand out so much. You can also see the odd true prefab in that area still too.

     Hawbush Road, Leamore, Walsall, WS3 1AG.

     I lived in a BSIF house in this street. My parents moved in when it was new, I think in 1947 (I wasn't born till 1961 so can't totally confirm), and they moved out in 1985. The house is still there as far as I know, although they have demolished some in the street to make an access road to new houses at the rear of the site.

     Hi,
     I find this website fascinating and very useful as we are in the process of buying a BISF house. Most people I speak to seem very cautious with these houses as they know so little about them. It is reassuring to see that they in fact proper houses built for long term usage.

     To the list I’d add Paget Road and
     Byron Square in Cambridge. These are in an area built around 1946 and has other types of pre-fab houses as well which I haven’t been able to identify.

     We are having the house surveyed next week, I hope all will be in order.

        Hi Sara, I've found this site very useful too. I've only been in my BISF house for a month now, but I'm very pleased with it.

        I've found though there are a lot of misconceptions about BISF houses, because a lot of people don't distinguish between the many types of prefabricated and semi-prefabricated house, some of which were structurally faulty. The plus side is you may be able to get a bargain!

        One thing to watch out for is if the house still has its original asbestos roof. It's easy to recognise and not necessarily a problem, but apart from Halifax I don't know of any mortgage lenders who will accept an asbestos roof (and they may charge you for a survey just to decline it).

        The main focus of the site is provide as much factual information as possible and dispel some of the old myths and false assumptions that once surrounded BISF houses.
        We've seen plenty of examples where paid professionals get it wrong about many aspects of these properties which only goes to show how deep these misconceptions are.
        Our other aim is to raise the profile of the BISF house to its rightful place within the housing market and remind purchasers that they can be an excellent investment as Ed states.

        We hope your survey goes well. I will try to dig out a typical survey report that I came across for a BISF and post it on the main page for you. It may help you understand in advance what the surveyor will be looking at.

     I forgot Shaws Way, which is next to the other four roads.

     I have seen mentioned that there are three types of BISF house: A, B and C but a Google search doesn't reveal anything about the differences.

     This photo shows one slightly different from mine:-

     

     In Bath each house has its own chimney, which is in the middle of the house (the fireplace is on the wall opposite the sitting room window) but this Glasgow example has a shared chimney and the fireplace must be on the party wall. Also there is no outhouse, and an extra window in the side of the house downstairs while the front windows are closer to the end of the house.

     Here are some more from Bath:-

     Camley Green
     Freeview Road
     Newton Road
     Pennard Green

     All of these have at least some BISF houses, interspersed with traditionally built houses and even a few prefabricated concrete houses (so-called Cornish houses I believe). Most of the latter have recently been demolished though.

     I believe there are some in Bristol too, because I have seen a photo on the internet of a BISF house captioned as Bristol.

     Locally a lot of the BISF and other nearby houses have an unusual layout in which the back of the house faces the road and the front door is accessed by a pedestrian pathway.

     I am surveying a BISF house in Western Avenue Epping Essex CM16. There are others, about 9 thers I think. Check street view if you want the numbers, they do stand out a bit from the trad builds.

     They have been refurbished with external cladding, bnew roof upvc upvc cladding and windows.

     Found no problems to date.

        Steve, glad to hear that you haven't found any major problems.
        I was talking to Tony Fuller – The Managing Director of Fuller & Sons of http://www.fullerandsons.co.uk last week and he has a vast amount of experience with BISF steel framed properties. He echoed a similar reply in that despite many years of working on this type of property he had found no significant structural problems giving further testament to the design.
