Queries About New Wall Insulation and Old Asbestos Roof.
Hi all, I am new to this forum and am hoping to find some answers. We have had our offer on a BISF house in Bath accepted. The house is generally in a good conditions (this is just my judgement, I am still to receive the survey), I believe for now it only requires cosmetic works like new wall paint and floor finishes.
I have two queries though that are playing with my mind.
1) The house is not insulated and require new wall insulation at some point. I gotta say I was surprised that it didn’t feel that cold inside, it’s currently unoccupied and has been empty for one month. What costs are we to expect? The estate agent quoted about £10k for new wall insulation and external finishes. Is this about right or will it be more? Can you recommend any companies who do this sort of work?
2) The house still has its original asbestos cement roof, although it has been roofed over on the outside with a new roof. Again I am awaiting the survey but from looking at it, it seems in an OK condition. I tried to attach a photo to this post but am getting an error message. The inside of our asbestos roof pretty much looks like the last photo in this post: https://nonstandardhouse.com/asbestos-dangers/
Now we are unsure whether buying a house with an asbestos roof is a good idea (contracts not exchanged yet).
I am wondering whether we will have big problems selling the house in 10-15 years even if the roof seems OK now. We are also wondering how much asbestos dust comes off the roof (we want to use the roof for storage) and am wondering whether the inside should be covered in plasterboard.
Any comments from your own experience would be really appreciated!!
Many thanks
Betty
Hi Betty, I am in the process of buying a BISF house and it’s in Bath too. I’ve just had the survey back and it seems there is asbestos in the house and the roof tiles. I wondered if you or Ed had any advice on getting quotes etc.? Thanks.
